In the early summer of 2000, a number of concerned GLBT and allied individuals came together to discuss the possibility of establishing a community center for GLBT people in Fargo-Moorhead and the Red River Valley. It was agreed that the time had come for GLBT people in our area to start a community center run by and for GLBT people. Working over the summer months, volunteers got our office space ready for our grand opening on October 7, 2000. Media coverage was provided by The Forum and television station KVLY.What is our mission? “To create a sense of community and promote education and social activities aimed at furthering the social, emotional, and physical well-being and development of the GLBT community in the Red River Valley.”
The Pride Collective and Community Center will realize its mission in part by providing space for GLBT and allied groups to meet and assisting with advertising the existence and schedules of these groups.
Since opening, the Pride Collective has been busy establishing contacts with persons and agencies in the Fargo-Moorhead area who provide services to the GLBT community and with fundraising activities to ensure the continued operation and financial health of the center. A number of groups now meet at the Pride Collective, and we have an office as well as a separate social/meeting space. We at the Pride Collective look forward to expanding our services to better serve the needs of GLBT people in our area.
