Gone Fishin'

Actually no fish will be harmed on our trip, but I'll be away for a few days visiting my brother in beautiful Rochester, NY. I'll be back blogging on Monday night.

For all my American readers, have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. For everyone else around the globe, have a wonderful time doing whatever it is you normally do.

  1. Welcome Back!

Please sign and pass the link to our statement on to everyone: www.petitiononline.com/Standnow/petition.html This non-partisan statement will be given to our elected officials as a united message from Americans who do not want our Constitution changed to legalize the denial of civil rights for lgbt people: www.petitiononline.com/Standnow/petition.html

    Please read the following:
Parents are tired of being silent while their gay daughters and sons live as second class citizens because the line between religion and government has been blurred. Children are tired of being taught to hate people they do not know because those people look like “fags.” Young adults are tired of becoming sexually active before they are ready because they fear someone will call them “queer.” Black people are tired of watching the unholy alliance between some black leaders and right-wing racist solidify around their mutual hate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (lgbt) people.

Civil rights for all are diminished when civil rights for some are denied. Personal safety for all is jeopardized when personal safety for some is at risk. Equality for all will never be achieved as long as equality for some does not exist. These are familiar words. They are words by which Americans claim to live.

The rights of lgbt people are being denied as you read. We live under the constant threat that our safety is only as secure as the comfort level of ‘straight’ people. We do not have equality in our homes; our life-long relationships are often ignored or even undermined by relatives. We do not have equality in the workplace; our ability to earn a living is often linked to whether we are identified as lgbt. Our country has a double standard for lgbt people, and it is time for this to end.

Please take a few minutes and follow this link: www.petitiononline.com/Standnow/petition.html Read the statement. Sign the statement. Pass the statement on to others. Let our government officials know that America is tired of the name calling and finger pointing. Tell our elected officials that the majority of us want our country to stand for justice.

This non-partisan statement is sponsored by Sankofa Way Spiritual Services, a non-profit, 501 (c) (3), progressive, faith-based organization dedicated to empowering black lesbians and building relationships across the boundaries that separate us all.

This statement is supported by the Gay Liberation Network, The Chicago Chapter of The Interfaith Alliance, Gold Star Families for Peace, and The World Can’t Wait: Drive Out the Bush Regime.

We are asking those who believe in equality and justice for all, the majority of Americans, to stand with us in solidarity against the oppression of lgbt people. If you, your organization, or religious institution would like to join our list of supporters, contact: sankofaway@sankofaway.org for information.

    Thank you,
